Part 1: Why Consequence Fidelity Matters

It was the day after we returned from the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station on Devon Island. While debriefing with members of Mission Control from The Mars Society, I was asked whether Flashline really felt different from a simulated mission.

Before I could say anything, the rest of the crew replied in tandem:
‘Yes.’
They made the point better than I ever could.

During this season there were several occasions when research and mission objectives were suddenly displaced by urgent operational problems. We found ourselves troubleshooting autonomously at times while relying heavily on the expertise of Mission Control at others. Those moments were neither planned nor simulated.

Different analog environments offer different forms of fidelity, creating opportunities to study different aspects of human performance.

This is why I often describe Flashline as occupying a liminal space between expedition and space analog. The remoteness, polar bear risk, and constant challenge of keeping critical systems operational mean that many of the stressors are genuine rather than simulated. This distinction is consistent with the characteristics of an ICE (Isolated, Confined and Extreme) environment, as described by Rahill et al. (2025).

Human psychology changes out in the field. Our brains don’t operate in a vacuum; they respond to context and to what is at stake. When mistakes carry real consequences for mission success or crew safety, risk is perceived differently. There is no convenient pause button, no quick exit, and medical assistance is hours away at best, weeks away at worst. The cost of mistakes becomes real, and our behaviour reflects that.

At the same time, crews are still living and working as analog astronauts within an isolated and confined habitat. They carry out workflows and procedures consistent with space analog settings. The mission context may be simulated, but the workload, interactions and relationships that emerge within it are very real.

I think that’s what makes Flashline such a compelling research environment. We get to observe how people respond to genuine operational stressors in the field, while also seeing how those experiences shape the routine and simulated moments back inside the habitat.

Perhaps that’s why consequence fidelity feels so tangible at Flashline. And why the crew answered the question before I had the chance.

It really does feel different.
